Why is it important for women to have a pap smear, i'm fairly strongly against this because i believe that the female or anybody for that matter cleans itself (this is why women have that discharge) i only believe in going to doctors if it's extremely a life or death matter and you need surgery or medication. So please, what is a pap smear and why do they say that all women once they have started having sex need to go for one?Is it ok not to have a pap smear?Women have been around and survived before without a pap smear so why is it necessary?Thanx. Hi Anon,
A pap smear is done so that doctors can get a sample of cells from your cervix to test for any abnormalities (to find cancer).
Here is more info if you'd like to read up on it:

So yes, while the body does clean itself of some things, cancer is not one of them. And it's not only after women start having sex that they should go for a pap smear, it's usually done annually once she turns 18.
And while people have survived in the past without getting one, what difference does that make? Do you really want to take that sort of chance - not catching any abnormalities - when this kind of medical procedure is offered to you?
Hope this helps! Take care.

Hey,
I'm not a medical person, but I do know it's important to check on things once in a while.
Think of your body as the engine in a car. If you only take the car to the garage when it's broken down it's not a very successful way to run a car. Then again, if you take it in for a service and have it checked over regularly then you can spot anything which could be a bigger problem down the line.
Your body is the same. A pap smear is a way of detecting cervical cancer early. Catch it early and it could save your life. OK, you might never get it - but it's all about maintenence. Medical check ups (such as a pap smear), dental check ups, immunisations, a healthy diet, exercise and so on - these are all part of keeping your body healthy through your life. It's the same as servicing your car, changing the oil and using the right fuel.
If you're not happy with your current doctor you can visit a wellwoman clinic or usually doctor surgeries have a number of doctors you can choose from. You may be happier with a female doctor?
Take the test, it's a few minutes of discomfort but it could save your life.
