Why does my professor tolerate me if he doesn't like me back?

Question - (25 January 2009) 2 Answers - (Newest, 2 February 2009)
A female Canada age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I've had him for 3 classes so far. I write love notes to him on my course evaluations. The most recent one I even signed my name to and gave him really melodramatic details about my life. I'm not even in any of his classes now, and he's helping me try to get this story published that I wrote about a professor/student affair! (I couldn't make this stuff up...) To boot, all of this is in my second language. I don't even know if he speaks English. Every time I go to see him in office hours I positively mangle his native tongue. And through all of this, he won't stop smiling at me. The other students dislike him because he's really abrupt with them. I've been in love with him for two years and I'm pretty sure he knows. Why does he keep me around? Is there any way for me to determine his actual level of interest?

I'm 21; he is 36. He is not married.

Hey, you're both legal. If you fancy him, then offer to make dinner for him at his place or something.

He is flattered by your attentions and he obviously thinks you have talent.

Also, he is PAID to put up with you and get the best of your work out of you.

As you say, you are 21 so he can be a little more liberal with you than if you were a teenager.

Carry on and work hard, if being in love with him makes you a better writer then what harm can it do other than hurt when you start to get over him?

Good Luck!! xx
