A male reader, DoubleM United States +, writes (17 August 2008):

DoubleM agony auntIn my opinion, and based on studies, reading and experience, women simply "heat up" much slower than men. For instance, the 1994 University of Chicago study, "Sex in America Survey," revealed that men orgasm during intercourse much more consistently than women, and that actually, less than one-third of women always have an orgasm. The reason, in my opinion and that of many others, is that typical men do not provide the right stimulus to heighten a woman's sexual arousal enough to orgasm. Notably, the stimulation also is rarely long enough. Men are ready to go and finish almost from the start, but women need a good period of "anticipation" that slowly builds to a sufficient level of arousal.

To complicate matters, if you'll excuse the term, most women prefer such things as romance, candlelight, being in the right mood, etc., etc. But to cut to the chase here, the one thing that men can do to hasten a woman's state of arousal is perform cunnilingus, if they really know how. If they have not mastered the art, they should learn it. The best book I've read is "She Comes First" by Dr. Ian Kerner. Relax, lay back and enjoy.

A reader, anonymous, writes (17 August 2008):

You are right. Male sexual arousal is mostly physical and visual. Simple direct stimulation of the penis will often result in male orgasm. Female orgasms are much more complex, involving a combination of mind and body. Female arousal is not just physical, it can come in a variety of ways like smell, sound, touch, and fantasy. Physical stimulation helps the process, but most woman need to be in the right place emotionally and mentally before the physical stimulation starts to work. This is why a female climax can seem to take longer to happen than a male. I think most women would agree however, that over time, a woman becomes more aware of her sexual needs, and once she and her partner are "tuned in" to her needs, arousal and orgasms come much more often, and more quickly and more easily.
