There are 3 trimesters in a pregnancy. I am 6 months pregnant so did some research on this myself.
The first is 0-12 weeks when your girlfriend may be extremely tired as her body adapts to the fact its pregnant. She can also have morning sickness/feel really ill. It is also the time when it is more likely to miss carry the baby so she should be taking it easy and going to bed when she's tired etc. You should have your first scan which will be a dating scan where they work out your due date. Her boobs will also grow and could get sore. Also your girlfriend should take folic acid suppliments definetly during the first 12-14 weeks. Folic acid lesses the chance of your baby having spina bifada and a few other things.
The second is the time you apparently feel at your best while pregnant. The tiredness lifts and you have more energy and bump begins to grow. This trimester ends around the end of the seventhish month. This is the best to have a holiday according to my midwife as your girlfriend will have more energy and hopefully not be feeling sick. The bad bits are this is when trapped wind, indegestion, constipation can kick in but seeing her midwife can sort all that out. The babies organs are forming properly, eyebrows and finger nails form aswell. Baby begins to respond to voices although I have been told they can hear alot earlier. I have noticed the last few weeks baby will respond to my voice and my partners. The baby can be sexed around 21 weeks although it is never 100% sure. I also found my hormones, which were all over the place the first 20ish weeks have settled down and I dont cry or get angry over absolutely everything.
The third trimester 28ish weeks until birth. I have just about hit this mark now myself so I don't know personally what the last 12 weeks are like but at the moment I feel no different from the last trimester apart from I'm getting fatter and its does become uncomfortable at times. I am also experiencing braxton hicks, which are fake contractions. They don't hurt as such but it is weird. Baby speeds up their growth rate now putting on fatty tissue and the organs finish up forming if they havent done so already. I'm due to start my anti-natal classes soon and have a tour of the hospital and things like that.
I hope this has helped. I tended to ramble a bit there. Congratulations by the way :D
