Hi, " It's the thought that counts". Whether you get him a big expensive gift or a small cheap one, i'm sure he would still appreciate it. I think you are abit insecure in your relationship and that is why you see the need to compete with his ex gf. Just get him something that comes from the heart. Even if you don't get him anything the fact that you missed him and will be glad to see him after his journey,i'm sure he would be glad just knowing that.
You should just have a candle light dinner, something small and quite as i am sure that he would prefer to have a quiet evening with you alone after his tiring journey.
Good Luck.

Norah,
I am sorry, but I need a little clarification to your question. Is your boyfriend traveling to visit you? Or is he normally with you and traveling for a week away and coming back to you? If he is coming to visit you, then a party for him while he is in town would be nice. It would be a chance for him to be social, have fun and meet your friends and/or family. If he is going on a vacation and coming back to you, then no, you dont give him a welcome home party. That is unneccesary and excessive. If he were traveling for months and months, then a welcome home party would be appropriate, but a week? No. As for a gift: If he is traveling to see you, then you probably would both give each other small gifts as a token of affection. If he is going on vacation and coming back to you, it is HE who should bring YOU a gift. It is kind of traditional that he should bring you back a souvenier. It shows he was thinking of you while he was gone and wants to share a small part of his trip with you.
