What is up with me? I'm so great at scaring men off.

A female United States age 41-50, *ymps writes:

Or so I worry. I'm generally considered very sweet, attractive, and smart. But I constantly worry about scaring men off or sending them running for the hills at every turn.

Most recently, I met a great man. He's moving a little quickly, but I am guilty of the same because we just kind of .. fit. However, this is scary for me and I am heading for that phase where I subconsciously try to scare them off to "beat them to the punch." I do this every single time. Things start going really well, I start getting scared, and then I start acting funny or being frigid to get rid of them as if to avoid eventually being rejected. They give no inclination of not wanting to be with me... I just do this.

Today, I did this to the great guy. I acted unlike myself, giggled at a couple of inappropriate points (in the bedroom... what an ass, huh?), and then tried to catch myself by being quiet. When asked why I was being so distant, I finally explained it was because I was afraid that I had started to like him and that made me nervous considering how quickly it had happened. That it wasn't my style to be like that. He admitted to the same feelings, and we agreed that perhaps we should just spend more time together and see how it goes. Then I had to add (like an idiot!) that I didn't expect anything and am pretty graceful when things don't work. Why don't I just doom us? LOL. I can't seem to get my head straight. So we parted ways for the day and now I can't shake the feeling that I won't hear from him again. Major anxiety. There could just be something wrong with me, but does anyone else see the same thing I'm seeing? Do you think it's possible someone doesn't mind that little indiscretion? Is it really no big deal?
