reader, anonymous, writes (20 February 2009): just a point of clarity on asking her while drunk. generally a very bad idea....however if you find yourself in that situation - if she says "you are drunk" tell she is "beautiful, and in the morning you will be sober and she will still be beautiful" Ahem saved my bacon on more than one occasion...
ok best time - when she isn't surrounded by friends. better to build up to it chat first then casually ask...
dont go for OTT romantic at first unless you really think it will work.

I'd keep it quite simple as doing too much leaves alot to live up to for future dates or events such as Valentines day etc.
I'd leave the date for the weekend so your both free and have no other plans, or if she might be a busy girl then possiby speak to her friends and get them to help you out if they can by not planning anything etc.
The best way a lad asked me out was by leaving one red rose and a letter on my doorstep telling me where we going and what time I'd be picked up which was so simple but so sweet at the same time.
It may depend what this girl is like some love all the romantic gestures flowers, looking in her eyes etc, others may prefer you just getting straight to the point and just asking them think about your girl and what she would like..

The best time between 4 and 5 am when you are really drunk works well... :)
