A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Okay,so I have a BIG problem. On March 23rd,2010, I had unprotected sex. We're both disease free and I know this for sure, so we both agreed that it would be okay to go unprotected and do the pull out method (not the smartest idea, i know). Additionally, i've got an ovulation tracker and my two peak days were on the 19th and the 20th. SOOOO, here's the problem: my period was supposed to come on the 3rd but hasn't come until this day. I'm not exactly regular when it comes to my period, so thats not the scary part. The scary part is the fact that i have some symptoms: i've been really tired, i've been nauseous (but no vomitting), i've had a heightened sense of smell (i smell men's cologne from miles away when no one else smells it), i have a lower back ache, my breasts are tender to the touch, and i have weird sensations in my abdomen. I realize that these could also be signs of PMS. Now, here are my questions 1) From the information i've given, do you think it's possible that I could be pregnant? 2) is it too early to take a pregnancy test or for pregnancy symptoms? 3) If it IS too ealry for a pregnancy test, when is the BEST time to take one? and 4)if my tracker told me I supposedly wasn't fertile on the 23rd, should i still be worried about pregnancy? Please help!I've done some reasearch but i've gotten thirty different answers to the same questions. I was hoping that women who have been pregnant or are pregnant or anyone educated in the field of pregnancy could help me out....

The person who is "educated in the field of pregnancy" would be your health care professional. Call your GYN for an appointment and you can talk with the nurse over the phone if you have this question too.

We get this question a lot and the answer is, "Buy a pregnancy test, read the instructions and follow them." Or go to the doctor's to get tested. That's the only way to know for sure. All the rest is just speculation and discussion and no substitute for an actual test and examination.

Good luck!

eyeswideopen agony auntYou may still get 30 different answers but I'll be you get few just like mine. Go get at least three pregnancy tests. Do the first when your period is 1 week over due, if negative do the next one 1 week latter, etc. Or if you want to know faster go to your doctor.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (6 April 2010):

Well- you can take a prego test up to five days before your missed period because that is when the body should start producing the hormones that would keep the uterine lining (make you not have a period) The later you wait the more accurate. In my experience the more stressed out about it you get the later your period comes, quite ironic i know. But it is best to take the prego test early in the morning. You could be over-reacting because of the circumstances and making the "side effects" seem worse than what you would normally think. The only way to know for absolute sure that you aren't prego is to get a test, and that should ease your worries too. The pull out method does have it's downsides- like if he produces pre cum there might be sperm that was in the pre cum. But if practiced effectively it is better than nothing. I would recommend getting on the pill and/or using condoms though because you wont get stressed out and it will regulate your periods. If your worried about your parents knowing a lot of health centers and planned parenthood's offer low cost birth control. Best of luck :)
