So the only thing I know about them is that they lessen your period and clear up your acne. What else? And any side effects such as weight gain? Thanks.

People react in different ways. There are also different amounts of hormones in the different types of pills. Some have the same amount in all the pills, some have different amounts for the different weeks. Some have higher values and some have less. It's because people react differently, some may be better off with one type of birth control pill, while another fits best with a different kind.
Birth control pills can, when you get the right type of pill for you, reduce acne. However, they can also GIVE you acne, if you are using one that isn't right for your body. You can gain weight, but that's not the pill directly. Gaining weight comes from you eating more. And being on the pill some feel more hungry than normal, hence they eat more, hence they gain weight. Your body basically thinks it is pregnant, and so some women eat more because of this.
Just google the pills, online doctors, or ask your own doctor about the pills. You can also borrow the leaflet from one of your friends, and read what the leaflet says about the pills and side-effects and how it works. It's all written in good detail on the leaflet.
