We were more than friends but it didn't work, should I give up or keep hoping?

Question - (1 August 2012) 1 Answers - (Newest, 1 August 2012)
A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

we were friends and started seeing each other but were never official. we fell out quite a bit so he told me he thinks we should just be friends so we don't destroy our friendship.

i've seen him since in a bar with friends, one minute he was talking to me like normal, next he told me not to touch him, after that he spoke to me like normal again an held my hand, next he wouldn't look at me and ignored me completely.

i text him saying i don't want things to be like that, that i'm disappointed with how things are because it isn't what i want and that i don't want to ruin our friendship and ignore each other.

he replied and said that basically we're still friends, he wants to be normal but he doesn't get over things right away and he's trying but it will take time.

i still really like him, when i think of us just leaving things all i want to do is cry. i don't know whether i should give up and move on or keep hoping? :(
