 I would recommend getting a facebook or myspace account. I am 21 and I find that over 90% of my friends have facebook. Not only will you be able to learn more information about him & his interests on his profile (without talking to his friends), but more importantly you will also be able to stay in contact with him. After staying in contact for a while, maybe you can work up the courage to ask him to get together with you.
You also mentioned being worried about seeming desperate. If you do go ahead and get a facebook (or myspace) account and contact him, my advice would be that after he replies to you, don't reply immediately. Give it a little time so that it doesn't seem like you were anxiously waiting for him to write you back. To keep the conversations going, try to ask him a question or two about himself. If he has interest in you (even if just as a friend), he will answer your questions and keep the conversation going by asking you questions in return.
