Underwater sex - how safe is it?

A female United Kingdom, anonymous writes:

Me and my fella want to have sex in an unheated outdoor pool. One thing I'm worried about is pregnancy. I know that the chlorine won't stop me getting pregnant, so we would definately use a condom. I don't like the idea of taking the pill for various reasons, so that's not really an option. But I have a few questions:

-Are latex or polyeurethene condoms safer for underwater sex?

-Will he be able to get it up in cold water?

-Does lube actually decrease the likelyhood of the condom ripping?

-Just HOW unsafe is it? All the sites I've gone on basically reeled off a list of reasons why you shouldn't do it, "but most of all, have fun!" Which is easier said than done now I'm paranoid about it. Is this just to warn you that it's a tad less safe than sex on a bed, or is it actually a major health risk/child-producing activity?

Or is it just to cover the websites' backs so they can say "I told you so"? I thought underwater sex was fairly common...?

Um, well it's poly-something anyway :S The SCUBA equipment idea is a brainwave, I'm sure that could make for some interesting roleplay...

Thanks for the advice :)

I suppose the main thing is that you can still breathe, so some SCUBA gear or a mask and snorkel are essential items of equipment. A tight fitting wetsuit each - pretty much essential in an unheated outdoor pool - would ensure that you wouldn't get pregnant.

Cold water is well known for having the effect of shrinking a man's tackle to the point that it becomes countersunk. However, if you're hot stuff you could warm the water slightly and reduce this effect.

Enough frivolity. Yes you can get pregnant, and no, it wouldn't affect his ability to get erect if the water was cold. It may even enhance it. I've never heard of polyurethane condoms though. Isn't that the stuff they make plastic camping mugs and plates out of?
