The cycle isn't that important medically speaking. If you have a steady cycle chances are your cycle will be just as steady after you used birth-control. So far there has been no clinically side effects proven if you skip out on your period using birth control, other than the side effects that come with birth control itself. In the leaflet that comes with my pills (Microgynon) it even tells you how you should skip your periods to still be on the safe side protection wise. There are no warnings. I also know people who choose to only have their period 6 times a year, using birth control to skip out on the other 6.
Having a menstruation can be a good indicator that your body is working well, and changes in the cycle can often give you clues about your health and well-being. But there are no reasons why not to skip your period once in a while.
As far as I know though, only birth control and pregnancy are things you can control yourself that can stop the menstruation.

If you start taking birth control it should stop the flow in a day or two. Why mess with your natural cycle though? Tampons or a menstrual cup can make it seem like you're not on your period at all (you can leave a menstrual cup in for 12 hours). What do you need your period gone for so badly you'd completely mess up your cycle for a few months?

You can get medication from your dr. It would depend on how long into your cysle you are, but its worht a try.

Birth control. Take one pill and the menstruation will be gone by the next day or so. However when you stop taking the pill the menstruation will start within 2-3 days. It is helpful when you need to change your cycle though, or even skip one period.
