Started taking the oral contraceptive Microgynon 30, and have started bleeding. Does anyone know why?

I started to take my first ever pack of Microgynon 30 (oral contraceptive) 3 days ago. I wanted to delay my next period as I'm going on holiday, so took my first tablet before I had my period (my chemist said this was fine!). I'm not using this as a form of contraception - it's for painful heavy periods.

On the second day of taking the pill, I began to get watery brown discharge, and today it's turned into what seems to be a period. I know you can get "breakthrough bleeding" while on this... is that what this is?

Can anyone else share their experience of starting this pill?

Thanks in advance!

See I spoke to the pharmacist because I was unsure (the leaflet in the packet just says it's best to start on the first day of your period, not that you have to - but if you didn't take it on your first day you wouldn't be sexually covered for the next 7 days). She said it was fine to start early. It was 8 days before my period was due... perhaps I worded that sentence wrong. I just meant that I started my packed before my period! sorry!!

Also, my doctor told me that there's a 12 hour gap for taking the pill... of course you should try to keep to the same time every day, but as long as it's in the following 12 hours it will be fine. Anyway, I've been taking it at roughly the same time (no more than an hour later)

Not complaining about this 'period' - it's much better than my usual. Just wondering if this was the 'breakthrough bleeding' or not.

Thank you all for your input! x

i'm on microgynon 30 as well but ive been on it for 2 years its takes a month for it to be fully effective. You cant just start on the pill then try not to have a period you have to let your body get used to it first i got told by my doctor not to skip periods for the first 6 months

chigirl agony auntIt variates from woman to woman and from time to time. When I start on the pill, my period stops or doesn't start, and I never had bleedings in between the planned period. However, this isn't unusual, it says so on the leaflet to the pill as well, that breakthrough bleedings might occur.

And yes, a breakthrough bleeding is just that. A small bleeding, or discharge, that lasts for a few days.

Just keep doing what you're doing, it's all good.

The pill takes at least 7 days to get into your system so taking it 1 day before your period is due will not stop it.

Usually it takes about a month for the hormones to get into your system and start working properly. When people want to skip a period they have usually been taking the pill for at least a month before hand and just go onto the second packet without a break.

However, i don't recommend doing that without speaking to your GP first.
