The only problem is that, while i found it very enjoyable, he only managed 10 minutes which was a little disappointing. I was a virgin and it had been a while for him so I wasn't expecting miracles but it didn't last any longer the second time.I start of giving him a handjob until he is properly hard then we begin sex, is there something else i should be doing instead to make it last longer?

YOU don't need to do a darn thing, beyond what you've described in this submittal.....
HE has some homework to do to learn about making sex as pleasant and rewarding for YOU as it is for HIM!!!!!!!
Give him a little feedback..... and tell him what you like.... how long (duration) you like it... AND anything else.... details.... that the two of you haven't yet shared....
Good luck...

That is not excessively quick. (to answer your title question. First times are always prone to timing problems. Practice makes perfect. As long as there is communication and willingness.
Yes there are some things you can do. You need warm up more than he does. in fact if He is Doing a proper job of foreplay (IMHO) he should not need a hand to get hard enough. If he is as young as you, a second round after a reasonable recovery time, (up to 2 hours, but sometimes less than 30 minutes) will last much longer. There are condoms with a male desensitizer in them that make him last longer. And last but not least make sure your clitoris is getting some attention.
