Should I take my sister's advice or follow my heart?

A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I like this guy whom is five years older than me. Well I usually look like I'm mad when I'm not and when I walked passed him, he smiled so I would. Then the next time I saw him he looked at me and asked how I was doing then I waved and when I was coming back he asked why I look serious and I responded and he was trying to flirt with me. I got the impression that he liked me.

So one day I asked him if he has a girlfriend and he said yeah in a way like he didn't care so I walked away after he said yes. I was disappointed a little. Then my sister said not to say anything to him any more because if he liked me he would ask for my number or give me his. I don't know if I should believe her or not because she was always jealous of me. I would like to be friends with this guy even if he has a girlfriend because there is nothing wrong with having friends. Should I take my sister's advice or follow my heart.
