Should I confess I'm gay, would it get him in trouble?

A male United States age 18-21, anonymous writes:

I've been online friends with another guy who lives in the UAE that I am 90 percent sure has feelings for me, and while I feel the same way I am unsure if he would get into any type of trouble if I were to confess my feelings for him and he were to respond positively. Personally, my reasoning is that if he isn't necessarily trying to keep anything secret than it should be fine to address the elephant in the room, yet I still feel like the whole scenario is too risky. What're your thoughts on the situation?

A female reader, Andie's Thoughts United Kingdom +, writes (7 November 2018):

Andie's Thoughts agony auntJust be online friends. You’re too young for an LDR to work out (you need money, lots of time to visit, transport, etc.) and definitely not when the person is in an area where being gay is illegal.

Honeypie agony auntYou do know that being gay in the UAE is illegal, right? Same as having sex with a woman/man out side of marriage.

Secondly, if you are under 18, you need to be careful. And if HE is under 18, ditto. If he is older than you... then you REALLY need to be careful. There are people out there looking for younger and vulnerable teens to exploit. And you might think, OH he isn't like that... well, you frankly don't know that.

SEVERAL non-muslim women have been jailed AFTER having been raped. Consider that for a minute.

Same sex relationships are definitely NOT encouraged there. The biggest group of gays in UAE are ex-pats (so Westerners working there) And even THEY have to be careful.

Same goes for trans people. A trans person can go to jail just for being trans and trying to enter the country.

Let me quote an article from the UK,

"According to the International Lesbian and Gay Association, consensual gay sex in Dubai is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Because the mentality here is that gay men need to be deterred from homosexual activity, police raids of clubs and private parties are common. For a time, the authorities even patrolled the plethora of Dubai malls, searching for “obvious” signs of homosexuality."

So while you don't plan on having sex with him anytime soon (I hope) even TALKING about it can pose a problem for him as there is strict censorship online.

If I were you I'd stick to just being online "friends" and no more. He also lives 1/2 a World away.
