Shared friends or separate social groups better in a relationship?

I was curious as to which scenario you think makes a relationship work better. If the both partners have the same group of friends that hang out on a regular basis or if each partner has their own group of friends that they alternate hanging out with or spend time with seperatly. I know you can make either work, but which one seems to show better results.
