 I'm sure it could happen. Lots of people can separate sex from love. (Men can be especially good at it, which I think is partly down to biology.)
To me, it sounds a little soulless and mechanical to have sex without intimacy, but you only have to consider that prostitutes do that very thing every day to know that it could happen.
