Here is a great article. I ditched the shampoo and now use baking soda and vinegar. I have been doing it about three months and my hair is now thicker and not oily at all.

Hi there,

i've had this problem forever! i'm testing out my hair at the moment - washing it once a week... sounds gross i know, but it actually seems to be helping my hair to not produce to much oil. I used to have to wash each day and now i can go 3 days without looking oily. and when it does get oily, talbum powder is my best friend.. Just use enough to dry up the oil but be careful to not use too much or your hair will look grey (if you're a brunette of black hair) not sure what it looks like if you're blonde or red-haired, but i imagine it changes the colour a bit.

Hi I'm a stylist/cosmetologist. I also had very oily hair in adolesence.

The oiliness is age related. Your diet and how you manage your hair does not alter the oil output.

1. Wash hair every day. Wash it twice in a session, as they do in salons. Scrub the scalp with shampoo the same as you would scratch an itch all over the scalp.

2. Use a clear shampoo. Clear shampoo is stronger, and doesn't have the wax or oil residue. Pantene Ice Shine is one.

3. Apply conditioner to hair only and keep it away from the scalp.

4. Do the final rinse in the coldest water you can stand.

If every day does not work out, try every other day.

Honeypie agony auntIt is most likely hormones. Wash you hair every other day, switch shampoo every two weeks ( just need two kind of shampoo - just different brands). You don't really need expensive shampoo either.

If you use conditioner DO NOT put that on you scalp. Just on the hair from about your earlobes and to the ends. THAT is the part of you hair needed the conditioner anyhow.

Tea Tree oil shampoo might help, but I wouldn't use it on a daily basis. It will help your scalp so massage it in good and long while washing the hair.

Also don't over brush or over blow dry our hair. Your follicles might be trying to over compensate for that.

Eating less fatty food( junk food) might also help as well as an increase in water intake. So can exercise.

Don't use hand soap for the hair either.

I know how you feel! My hair is the same, it gets oily so fast.

Unfortunately, this is a common thing for teenagers. It is probably down to hormones, they do all kinds of annoying little things to your body. Oily hair is one of them.

You could try washing your hair more often, perhaps every day. There are shampoos out there which are gentle enough to be used every day. I know this might be a pain though. I hate washing my hair, so if you're anything like me, it could be irritating!

Or you could try a shampoo which is specifically for oily hair, rather than an ordinary one. That might help. There are also dry shampoos and sprays, which can be used to give your hair a bit of a boost, if you don't have time to wash it. You might have to look around for them though, and I also don't know how expensive they might be.

If you think it is getting really bad though, and you can't stand it, then maybe you could ask your doctor what they suggest. They might have some more ideas on how to help.

There is a big chance that this will improve as you get older and your hormones settle down. Mine is a lot better than how it used to be, although I think I am just inclined to have oily hair. So until then, maybe some of the suggestions here might help. I hope you find something that works for you. x
