Okay, well, I sort of have a problem. I'm not sure if i got my period or not. I was at the beach the previous Sunday and when i came back, the inside of my bikini bottom was a brownish color and im 12 so i figured I probably just got my period but then the next day it came in pretty thick and it came out darker.

I've heard when you first get it its light and the next day it was light but its been going on for 4 days now and i think it finally stopped, but just out of curiosity, is that normal for it to be thick and is it normally for it to go on for four days!? Just curious if you think this could be something else like a medical issue?

Yup, i'm fourteen and I just started last year and I nearly died of shock when I went to the toilet, yeah it can last up to a week and your first is normally pretty heavy. Your gonna need to use pads around the same time of month (note, it varies A LOT in the first year) and hopefully you won't get period pains (I get really bad pains! _)

Take care x

Wendyg agony auntyes that pretty normal to happen. When i had mine at age 11 thats pretty much how it started. It did tend to go a little lighter in colour, but the strange thing with me is I had a nose bleed the same day! Wierd or what! Anyway the first one lasted like 3 or 4 days and then i think a couple of weeks later I had another one. Then nothing for like 2 months. Then they started to settle down, but I think it was around the 6 month mark where they started to form a proper pattern. Everyone cycle length is different, the average is about 5 days, but some are as long as 7 and others only have 3 days, but over a period of time you will see the pattern start to develop. If it helps start to do a diary now so that you can see how you are progessing and you will gradually get see a pattern. Welcome to womanhood! The start of many changes, might be a bit scary but its a bit exciting too!

Take care x

hannieseds agony auntHey there,

Don't worry about this sweetie. I got my first period when I was 12 at the beach too actually and I FREAKED coz it wasn't like you expect it - red and well, like blood! It was thick and brown and looked bloody disgusting (no pun intended)!! I told my mum about it because I didn't really know what was going on and because it wasn't 'normal' blood, but she told me that hers started in the same way, so I took it as being okay and just my body starting to develop in a new and exciting way.

The length of a womans (because you are officially a woman now!!) period and if it is light/heavy varies greatly between people and from month to month. So four days is average and you will probably experience very light to very heavy, thick periods from month to month. AND don't be worried if you don't get another one for a few months, even longer, as your body is very slowly going to develop so it won't get into a regular monthly pattern quickly. I had my first, then about 6 months later I had my second then the continuous monthly cycle began.
