A female reader, skye United Kingdom +, writes (26 August 2007):

skye agony auntOk, firstly take a deep breath and calm down! All this worry you are having is not helping. Your monthly cycle is a very sensitive thing and if you keep on like this you'll end up a nervous reck. Honestly, worry can delay things.

Secondly, the symptoms you are experiencing could be pregnancy ones but they are so similar to those of premenstrual ones that is would be impossible to tell for sure.

Thirdly, your tests came back negative. That is good news. Todays tests are highly sensitive and are exactly like the ones your doctor would use to determine pregnancy. So it is most unlikely that you are pregnant.

Lastly, sometimes women dont ovulate in the month. It doesnt mean that there is something wrong, it simply means that you did not ovulate. Or perhaps you did and your where a little late. No matter how regular you usually are, sometimes things are late and again it is for no particular reason.

So long as you performed the test as per the pack instructions and waited long enough from the date you think you may have become pregnant. This is usually 19/20 days to determine a "true" result. This can be repeated usually 4 days later if you got a negative result and still suspect pregnancy, for the pregnancy hormone doubles in the body every 48 hours and is detected in a higher concentrate in the urine after this time.

However, if you are seriously concerned, then I would suggest that you visit your doctor for a blood test. This can tell for certain. You will also be able to begin medical treatment straight away if you are having a baby, for you both deserve the best care you can get.

While you are with your doctor you could discuss the best methods of birth control that would be suitable for you and your body. Im sure you dont want this worry again.

Good luck,

Skye
