writes: My husband harbors a lot of anger towards his ex-wife, even though they have been apart for 9 years. They have three adult kids, so sometimes they have to be around each other for social occasions involving the grandkids, etc. This past weekend, one of his son's became a new daddy and two of his grandchildren celebrated birthdays. My husband was so irritable going to the hospital to see the new little one, even though he adores his kids and grandkids and seemed to be happy about the baby. He was also crabby when we went to the other two kids' birthday party. I asked him why he was so crabby but he just blew it off. In my mind I'm thinking it's one of two things. Either he is anxious about being around his ex or he feels like I am out of place since I'm not the kids' biological mother or grandmother. He does refer to me as 'grandma' and talks about 'our' kids. What do you think? And, if it is the dread of seeing his ex, how do I help him deal with it?
