 I would leave it a couple of weeks see if he gets in touch.
If he doesn't then I would move on with your life and try to forget about him.
He doesn't seem to care about you too much if he can break up by sms.

This is way too little information.
You werent together on New Years and you haven't spooken in 5 days? This sounds like a long distance relationship.
Maybe he just realized that he doesnt want to be spending all his Holidays alone while everyone around him is having fun and celebrating.

 sometimes ppl can ponder over that thought they dont want to hurt the other so they keep sayingi love you too then they drop it like a bombshell, my ex he said he loved me then 5 hrs later after a few beers cheated on me and ddnt tell me for 3 days..i would calmly and rationaly ask him why he wanted to break up that you would like an answer as it seemed so out of the blue..best advice would be to try and move on hun wounds heal with time xxx hope this helps

One minute we were all lovey dovey, then two days later he text to say he'd met someone else and to leave him alone. I'm not saying that your bf has met someone else,it could be that he was drunk and just behaving like a prat. If he didn't really mean it then he's probably reluctant to contact you. So you can have closure and find out what the problem is I'd call him, but don't appear to be needy.
