"Fix Friendship?"

I'm having a problem with one of my closest friends. Lately it seems that we've been growing apart. Our mutual friends have been telling me that we are both saying things about each other behind our backs. I really want to improve our relationship and get it back to the way it used to be...How do I do that?

A male reader, anonymous, writes (2 December 2007):

First and foremost, never say things about your friend that you wouldn't say to his face. Next, contact the friend, tell him or her that you are sad you are growing apart, and that you'd like to spend more time together.

That still might fail. If it does, leave it alone for a while. Stop hanging out or thinking about it. If you are meant to remain friends, you will.

Try spending more time together.

Unfortunately, this often happens with friends and they end up growing apart.
