A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

hi, well I'll be 16 in a couple weeks, and have pretty much the typical high school life. im a cheerleader, have an amazing boyfriend, get good grades, lots of friends. i should be so happy. everything is going great for me. i have one major problem tho. cheerleading for basketball season ended about 2 weeks ago and football season wont start until May. over these 2 weeks, ive been feeling horrible about myself. ive been trying to keep up with exercising but every time i look in the mirror, i look like ive gained so much weight. my stomach went from being perfectly flat to bigger than usual... ive always had a real small waist but i look wider now. every time i get hungry i get so frustrated about eating. i dont want to gain weight. im so scared of being overweight and every time i step on the scale im DREADING the day it says 115. thats not my body! im not that big!

My boyfriend keeps telling me "baby you have a model's body, you're so gorgeous, you dont need to worry you're perfect" but that just makes me even more mad! i feel like hes lying to me to make me feel better. Is there any way to get back to my usual size besides incessantly working out? because that doesnt seem to be working!!!

thanks!

pandabird agony auntyou don't need to lose weight, you need some perspective. all you need to do is eat healthily and do regular exercise, as i imagine you'll need to stay fit to do cheerleading in may.

115lbs is nothing anyway, i imagine you're a slip of a thing.

A female reader, Tigerlily United States +, writes (13 March 2010):

Hi honey,

Well if you are 15 now about to turn 16, I have to say your body is still growing. it might continue to change over the next few years as you mature. If you are fit and active and 115 lbs freaks you out I would say your anxiety is more in your mind than in your body. Unless you are 3"6' tall, 115 lbs. is not fat. And I doubt you could gain any significant weight in two weeks. Have you gotten your cycles yet? Sometimes your period can make you retain water which might bloat your stomach out a bit.

You have to accept that your body is not a statue, it's a living breathing being. It may change and fluctuate from time to time. If you let that freak you out or put so much pressure on yourself to be perfect that you are actually MAD at your BF for telling you you are beautiful? That speaks more to being way too sensitive and expecting too much of yourself. Anorexics don't see themselves clearly... they are rail thin yet they still "think" they are fat. You might want to consider talking with a therapist to see if you have some sort of disorder this way, before things get out of hand.
