Is there any way around using our current landlord for a reference?

Question - (20 July 2021) 3 Answers - (Newest, 21 July 2021)
A female United Kingdom age 51-59, *veca writes:

Been living in a private rented accommodation for 2 years. We don’t want to stay where we are long term and looking to move but are not in any rush to get out. Our past landlord didn’t do anything in the house we rented from her and if we did find a house now would we have to use her as a reference because they always say if you have not lived in your current accommodation for 3 years then they want a past reference. We would not want to ask her or let her know where we are moving to so would our current landlord be enough for a reference or not or is there some other way around this.

Call the Citizens Advice Bureau and ask them for advice. This is the kind of question they get all the time.

Honeypie agony auntWe can't give you a complete answer. Maybe ask the person you are about to rent from if you can use a reference from such and such landlord.

I'm sure you can just explain that your current/past landlord doesnt respond to your messages, or you dont have their contact details, or they are sick and you dont want to bother them or any number of reasons. You dont necessarily even need a reference. How would someone moving out of home be able to rent a place if they needed a reference? I never gave one when living in private rented in the UK. Just tell the agent you dont have one and cant get one.
