Is my supervisor worried that he'll get in trouble if he likes me?

Hello, I want to know your point of view on this.

I like my supervisor from work. As you may know, supervisors aren't supposed to date employees that are below their position. I rarely talk to him and it is usually when no one from work is around.

My supervisor and I were talking for about an hour. He was sitting in front of me and making himself a bit silly with his antics. Anyways, my supervisor asked me for a favor (non job related) and I asked him for money as a joke. He said he would give me a hug instead. I asked him what was in for me. He then said instead of the hug lets make it two half hugs. I said no and he said fine, walked away. I told him I would do it for the one half hug. So, we half hugged. He put his arm around my arm and held me tightly close to him while I put my arm on his back, the hug was long (probably 6-10 secs) because I started to pat his back so I could end the hug. Then I moved away and we kept on talking until another supervisor showed up and interrupted us.

This happened at work in the parking lot. So, I am kind of confused as to why would he would want to offer a hug, he could have offered something else or say never mind. But then why would he say half a hug? Does he like me or not? I feel there is a connection, but maybe he is scared that he might get in trouble because he is my supervisor. And every time he talks to me it's when no one is around. I am going to get transferred in less than a year, so I'd like to have an idea if he likes me or not before I go.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (6 November 2012):

I know the two of you have some attraction for one another but the adult thing to do is not act upon those feelings until either one of you is no longer employed there. When personal and business intertwine its hard to differentiate the two sometimes. So I think its best that the two of you wait until some other employment is sought out and there is no problem for the two of you to date. Best wishes.
