A reader, anonymous, writes (13 February 2021):

I started to masturbate when I was 11. I am now 72, and I masturbate 2 or 3 times a week- I live alone . I don’t see a problem with this.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (14 January 2017):

It's perfectly natural.

And a personal choice.

Most men and women masturbate.

My boyfriend actually prefers not to. Why? Because it pales in comparison to sex with me. He would rather save it all for me. Now, that is different for a man!

But if you enjoy it, do it. There is nothing wrong with it. I started when I was 13 and now in my 40's I still do it. I prefer sex with my boyfriend to masturbating but we masturbate together sometimes. And I do it when he is on a business trip or feeling particularly turned on if he is not around. It is perfectly ok.

Phil052 agony auntIt's totally OK for you to masturbate, as others have argued far more eloquently than I ever could. Just as long as it's not when you are actually playing sport.

A female reader, YouWish United States +, writes (12 January 2017):

YouWish agony auntAbsolutely it's okay! It actually does you good to do it! The health benefits of doing it are managing stress and depression, gives your brain healthy endorphines, it bolsters your immune system slightly but noticeably, helps you sleep better, it's heart-healthy, among other great benefits.

In the past, many training regimens incorrectly spread the myth that having a robust sexual life during training caused a loss in stamina. In truth, a lot of that was due to the activities surrounding sex in the older times such as drinking, smoking, and the STI's that casual sex make you more at risk for. Even in the movie "Rocky", his trainer Mickey urges him to stop being physical with his then-girlfriend Adrian, his reason being "Women weaken legs".

It's a myth. Unless you're being obsessive and masturbating 15 times per day (in which case a hormonal imbalance and some other side-effects come into play), the benefits are very good for your health and far outweigh the effects of withholding ejaculation for long periods. Your body marvelously causes involuntary emissions to help keep things going even if you don't masturbate.

Even practiced daily, masturbation is a fantastic idea. It's far more important for you to watch what kinds of food you eat or avoiding drugs, cigarettes, and limiting alcohol to responsible levels. Smoking in particular decreases lung capacity and stamina and can shorten and weaken many athletes, aging them way too quickly. Also, people miss this obvious one, but GET SOME SLEEP! Sleep is *the* restorative for muscles, the body's way of repair and rejuvenation. Skimp on that, and your performance *will* suffer.

A male reader, N91 United Kingdom +, writes (12 January 2017):

N91 agony auntI think it's a myth. You'd probably have to masturbate thousands of times a week for it to have a serious effect on your testosterne.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (12 January 2017):

There are no negative physical effects of masturbation and it has distinct advantages to other forms of sex: Zero risk of unwanted pregnancy, zero risk of STDs, it's always available when you're in the mood and, best of all, your hand will never talk back or whine or complain or make demands.

Virtually all teens masturbate as it's a healthy outlet for your raging hormones so there should be no shame or embarrassment and at age 60 it's a pleasure I indulge in pretty much every day.

If masturbation is a sin, then why did God place our genitals at arms' length?
