Is it normal at my age to be waking up like this?

A male age 41-50, anonymous writes:

Hi folks, specifically the guys.

I'm 46 and recently I've been waking up at about 4am by a rock hard, but quite uncomfortable erection.

I wouldn't say it's painful, but it definitely isn't pleasant feeling, it literally wakes me up, and it's harder than anything I can remember in my teen years.

I even get it if I have sex before I go to sleep, sometimes that just makes it worse.

Is this normal for my age? I mean, I like that I can still get such a virile erection, but it shouldn't feel uncomfortable.

BTW, most people are going into their second sleep cycle of slow-wave sleep between 3 and 5am. Nature has built into males a "cork" that keeps us from urinating in bed while in deep-sleep. It's difficult to urinate when you're erect. You wake-up to relieve yourself! Sometimes it's a sign of low blood sugar; so get checked for diabetes. For some, it's due to anxiety and depression that they wake-up in the middle of the night at nearly the same hour.

Your doctor will let you know if there is any particular medical-issue to be concerned about. It seems pretty normal in most of us guys, and you're finding it unusual for you.

You can talk to your doctor, but nocturnal-erections are normal in healthy boys and men. I think you're overthinking it; and the fact it's unnerving is because it's unexpected and has no particular purpose. It goes away, so there's no big deal.

Do you sleep in pajamas, sweats, or in your underwear? Maybe what you're wearing to bed is too restricting in the groin area. It's even more uncomfortable, if you sleep on your stomach. Otherwise, the erection is just a normal male biological-function. Up to now, you probably never paid any attention to it. It's like finding the first gray hair. You'll pluck it out! You really don't start to take notice until there's another and another. It keeps growing back, in different places!
