xpixie_dolliex agony auntI don't think it is illegal.

If it was a half-brother or half-sister then it would be because you would be blood-related.

But if you're just related because your parents are married together then I don't think there would be a problem.

Like DrPsych said, it might be difficult for other family members to understand.

But overall, I don't think it would be illegal, just maybe hard for people to accept.

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (28 May 2009):

DrPsych agony auntIf you have no blood-tie between your parents and yourself then it would be legal, but many people would question if it is morally acceptable. It may be very difficult for other family members to understand and if there is a future relationship breakdown between the mother and father of the child it can have consequences for the extended family too.

If you are the step-sister and your step-brother is related to you because you share a mother or father then it would definitely be illegal in the UK. Moreover, apart from the incest issue there would be medical risks associated with having a baby between close relatives. Basically, most families have medical conditions that run from generation to generation in the gene pool (such as diabetes or hypertension). Not everyone in that family will definitely get these conditions but there is an increased risk. Therefore, if a child has been conceived between blood-linked step siblings it is very important to get checked out by a genetic screening service to identify and anticipate any problems that might arise.
