Internet dating advice?

Question - (7 December 2009) 1 Answers - (Newest, 7 December 2009)
A female Canada age 41-50, anonymous writes:

Hello all,

Apparently all the cool kids are dating online now, and I thought I might give it a try. There are a few guys who I would like to contact (my account is private, so no one can contact me without me contacting them first). However, I don't really know what the practice is for contacting someone for the first time.

I just want to chat a bit online and see if they seem interesting before I even think about meeting with anyone.

Any advice on first emails (length? tone? jokes?)?

How about making friends first before considering dating? Should I just say I am interested in friendship right off the bat, then see where it goes from there?

Thanks a bunch!
