If you had protected sex, then it is unlikely that you are pregnant. It is more likely that you are experiencing lighter or heavier periods as a function of your age. Changes in weight, diet, stress levels, any number of things can cause your hormones and therefore your periods to fluctuate.
I think it would be a good idea for you to buy the pregnancy test and follow the instructions on it; they are usually very accurate. If you are really concerned, go and see your gynecologist. You should have one if you are sexually active anyway.
My guess is that you are stressing unnecessarily.

There are only three ways i can think of to know really if you are pregnant- 1) wait 9 months 2) get a blood test in a short while or 3) get a pee test from a chemist - but this should be followed up with proper blood test.
It could be lots of things, haven't eaten right etc. What is the colour like is it brighter than normal ? does it stop? I wouldn't worry too much but i would get pee check to help put mind at rest. And then see how things are in a few weeks. Maybe see this post:
