i am in love with you: this is between partners. this is the only suituation it can be used in.

hiya, in my opinion they are two very,very different meanings, i used to tell my ex... i love you but never told him... i'm in love with you, because i cared for him alot ,but that was it. we split up and now im in a very loving relationship and i am completely IN LOVE with my fiance. I tell him everyday i'm in love with him and every day i fall more and more in love with him. hope this helps x x x

i love you -- is stating that they love you to remind you and so that you know they love you some people need their partners to say i love you and others just say it or some dont
