I have very strong feelings about becoming an AKA, but I have a teacher that is a Delta and she talks down on the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She also tells me things like I should be a Delta because I have darker skin, and every chance she gets, she says " I don't know why dark skin girls want to be AKA's because they didnt want you then and they don't want you now". It makes me made because she would try to lower a young girls selfestem just so they would join her sorority, I explained to her that AKA is my legacy and I couldnt pledge anything else even if I wanted to. What do you think about this situation?

After you have had time to observe all of the sororities and see what they are about them you should make your decision. All I could think about was Delta Sigma Theta before I entered college but after I had a chance to check out the different sororities and to see what they stood for I changed my mind. I am an Alpha Kappa Alpha lady. I have 2 nieces that I expect to follow in my footsteps but if they chose to pledge any other sorority I would not like it but I would have to accept it. I have told them if you pledge AKA all if the expenses will be covered by me but if they chose other wise they're on their on. I am very fair skinned but they are of a darker complexion. If I felt in anyway that we discriminate I would in no way want them to pledge. Besides our supreme Basileus complexion is very dark. So that saying is absolutely not true. Make up your own mind. I would never belittle another sorority. I love my 20 pearls. They represent an Alpha Girl

I don't beleive a frat/soror would turn you away because of your skin color, it's about your heart. Its natural your teach would talk down about AKAs, cause she's a Delta, but she should still show SOME sort of respect for them. So to sum it all up, DO YOU the way YOU want!

NEVER tell anyone about your D9 Greek aspirations. You'll understand more once you get to college. Even if you're a legacy, you still need to be discrete.
I think you are giving your teacher and her opinion too much power. Everyone thinks their organization is the best, so her comments don't surprise me. If you think AKA is a good fit for your aspirations, what she says shouldn't matter.
I encourage you to learn more about ALL of the NPHC sororities, learn their history, and give some thought as to why you really want to join (hint: they're going to ask you this during your interview. "Because I'm a legacy and have no choice" is not the answer you want to give).
