There must be some great schools in the UK, my friend briefly dated the creator of grand theft auto...he lives in Edinburgh. Where there is a way there is a will. Struggle and make it happen. Don't get stuck in a pity party or working a useless job that gets you nowhere.

Hi
Its very hard getting into graphic design, without a degree - if your studying for one, then start by voluntary work, or intern. Send out CV and letters to firms that employ graphic designers. You can get a summer job doing anything if its cash you want for your trip but there is alot of competition as you know.
Have you explored getting funding for your trip?

Volunteer.
Volunteer in places that need Graphic Design. Find local non-profit groups where you could volunteer for a limited number of projects for you to get experience and to start networking.
Also, depending on how you feel about it, you can also check out fiverr.com and do very small projects for 5$ a piece, again just to build up your portfolio, and network to eventually get bigger paid gigs.
