I've done a fair bit of 'love from afar' in my life, and the one thing that was always welcome was a letter with a 'sports page' at the end of it. Something he can take out of his top pocket when he's alone, have a quick read and slip it back into his pocket for later. Pretty much guaranteed to put a grin on his face. Mind you, I was living on a big warship with about 2000 other men with no women around until we hit the bars ashore.
If you absolutely must buy him something, make it something practical that he can use rather than put on a shelf to be dusted. Try to find out what hobbies he's got - maybe there's a subscription service to a relevant magazine.
