I want to buy my GF a diamond engagement ring. I know they are way over priced/marked up at the jewelry stores. Does anyone have any tips on how to haggle to get the best price? Has anyone ever purchased one at a discount site online? What would you recommend? Thanks!

I believe old people generally like to keep their expensive belongings "hidden" in their homes. Perhaps you could resort to burglary?

Or if not, eBay? or, if not, find something within your financial means AND concentrate on making the engagement an emotionally rewarding experience.

I do understand your dilema, you want the best for your other half, because you want to provide the best for her, however, thoughtfulness, dedication, commitment and faithfulness are worth FAR MORE to most women than the value of the diamond in their engagement ring.

But... if she is the kind of girl that puts value on a relationship to the cost of the ring... well - good luck having a life with her - you'll need it!

Avoid any discount online stored, buy something in your financial means and show your love by your actions. That's all you need to do :)

David Lewis agony auntEbay can be very good, but you can try to haggle at jewellery stores, some will try to better other stores prices, so shop around.

Also ask around friends, as they may know somebody who works in a jewellers and may be able get discount for you.

I paid £720 for my fiancee's ring, but that was AFTER a 40% discount. My friend ran a jewellery store, so it is always worth checking out. Even if it is a cousin of a friend of a friend. People love helping people out. Never underestimate word of mouth.

If it was me, I wouldn't care if it was a diamond. But if you have your mind set on getting her the diamond, and you also have your mind set on saving money, I might suggest a Pawn shop. Of course, this would be a used ring... If you came across the diamond you liked, you could always bring it to a jeweler and get it cut and put in a setting you like better. That might be a cheaper alternative. Just remember, this is something she's going to have for the rest of her life, so if it costs you a little extra money, it's not going to really make a difference once you average the cost by the amount of years she's going to be wearing that ring. Good luck! Hope she says yes!
