A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I'm afraid that I've upset my teacher.

Our class was in the library today and we were supposed to be doing research for an upcoming project. I'd checked out a few books for it and felt pretty good about the whole thing, so i decided to read my book for english class (i love reading!). but, i opened up a website on the topic just to look busy, though i was glancing at it too.

anyway, i put down the book and was chatting with my friends for a second and the teacher came over and was like "wow" at my topic and started talking to me about it. (we're usually pretty friendly). anyway... he went away so i went back to reading.

i put my book a little bit later to check out some other sites but then went back to the original one and went back to reading. right then, he came over and he was like "hmmm... you're not doing any work." (or something like that) and i was like, what? and he started saying stuff about how i was still on the same website and pointed out that i was reading. and i was tapping my finger lightly against the page (some sort of fidget, i guess) so he said "stop tapping at me!" which i hadn't even realized i was. he said all of this pretty jokingly, but it was his eyes; they were killing me. he just looked so dissapointed that if he walked away any later i probably would have cried.

then, i saw him a bit later in the day in the hallway and he was calling me a liar all jokingly (with none of the eyes), as if everything was all better.

the thing is, i still feel like i dissapointed him and i hate it. i hate the way he looked at me... i mean, he really knows how to make a girl feel guilty.

what can i do? what should i do?

jessica04 agony auntAs a substitute teacher, I can promise you that we get over those things pretty fast.

He knows that he'll encounter this type of situation in high schools, and you aren't the first student who he has ever though was off task for an assignment.

If it really bothers you tomorrow just go talk to him over lunch or after school. By doing that, he'll see that you really do care about his class, and that you most likely weren't blowing him off. But I wouldn't stress this much, he was just playing with you.

This is verified as being by the original poster of the question

i was reading a book, not going on an innapropriate website, not that it really matters...

it's just, i hate feeling like i've let people down and take any and all criticism horribly. i feel almost haunted by the guilt-- the experiance.

Honey, I'm a teacher. As long as one of my students stops misbehaving and gets back on track, I would quickly forget a minor incident like that.

ArmyMedic agony auntI'm sure he'll get over it, at the end of the day it's his job to educate you and if you are appearing to be messing about on line instead of getting on with your work he will tell you off, it's his job.

Don't worry about it, I'm sure that once you hand in an excellent piece of course work he'll see that you were studying after all.

Teachers don't take things personally, they just do their job and then at 4.30 go home to their wives and joke about the silly things the kids get up to.

Olivia(Y). agony auntEveryone goes on different sites at school other than the ones they are ment to. I've been in trouble alot for it but don't worry about it as long as you get your work done thats the main thing.

Why are you worried that you have upset him? Because he was joking with you shows that he knows you are a good student and wants to be friendly with you, he isn't disapointed in you.

If you ever have this happen again just laugh it off or make a joke with him. Everyone makes mistakes and bends the rules at times. Don't worry about it, you are a normal teenager!

Good luck babe
