A female United Kingdom age 30-35, *oHarryoO writes:

I may just be dramaticizing this but i think i have OCD, i think this because i always pay attention to the smallest most pointless things such as writing the date for a lesson i write in pencil which i may rub out continuosly untill i decide it looks okk. If i write i pen i tear pages out my book if the 'd' in 'friday' doesn't look smooth (an example) another example is the other day in one of my lessons i went threw 10 pieces of paper writing the dat untill it looked okay... i hadn't even started my work yet it's also strange because i am enviromentally aware about waste but i feel i need to do it because it makes annoyyed if its not right. My second example is... i watched 28 days later, 28 weeks later and dawn of the dead not recently or even together at any point but now i always set myself limits such as imagining there is a zombie running down my drive to my door and i have to get up the stairs before he comes past my garage and if i make it he goes away. Just generally my thoughts scare me at times because i often say such unecessary things in my head like i wish somebody i love very much dead and then for fear of it happening i say 'no i don't, no you don't' over and over again in my head. Lastly when i wait for my bus and cars pass i imagine the car swerving and hitting me but then i do it to every car determining if they are going fast enough to kill me its really frightenting because i hide it extremley well, clearly because everytime i mention it to my or dad that i think i have ocd (I only say that i don't go into details) they laugh or patronise me... what is this? is it serious? i relitivley sure its not normal so what is it?

Hi.

Just read your message, and hoped that I might be able to help you in some way.

It sounds as though the things you describe are really starting to get to you. You say that you find it frightening, which must be really difficult, especially as you are able to hide it, and so may seem fine to other people. I'm sorry to hear that you have tried to tell your parents, and you didn't get the reaction you wanted from them. How would you like them to respond? Are you hoping that they might be able to help you? Do you think that you could try explaining to them a bit more about how this is affecting your life?

Is there anybody else you feel that you might be able to talk to? It must seem even more scary if you feel alone with this concern. Perhaps you could speak to your GP, if you feel that this is interfering with your life, providing that you feel comfortable with your doctor.

I hope things start to improve for you, and please remember that although it may feel like it, you are certainly not alone, and there are lots of people out there who would not hesitate to help, reassure, and comfort you.

Take care.

-Sam.

My friend is the same way. She does almost the same things as you except she's alittle worse. OCD is a hard disease I've watched my mother goe thru it. Therapy helps if you do think ur OCD go see a doctor talk to them about they can help u. If not a doctor a teacher? Counselor? Anyone.

Bon chance dear!

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (4 April 2009):

I see a few people on here thinking they have OCD when really they are just a bit odd or a bit anal about things.

OCD means not just that things have to be right, but that you feel you HAVE to do these things or something terrible will happen. It can cause anxiety attacks and all kinds of things.

It really ruins their lives as many CAN'T physically bring themselves to leave the house without doing a million checks etc.

Really try hard to snap yourself out of it with logic as you don't want to get to that point.

I think you may have a mild case of it here, but there could be other factors. Watching zombie films when you are young can scare you and that can have an effect on you like your fear of getting in the house.

But your anxiety about your family being hurt by your thoughts is more of a serious symptom.

The thing with OCD is that you can get out of it if you FORCE yourself not to do these things. Try pushing yourself to the limit by doing a badly written date and leaving it.

If you do feel it is affecting your life and want some outside help then go to the doctors by yourself and see what he thinks. He will be able to see if you fit the symptoms and need help or if this is just going to be one of your more quirky bits of your personality.

You always have control of who you are so tell yourself off and you can get over anything.

Good Luck!! xx

No, this doesn't sound like OCD really. Sounds like you have an overactive imagination! You'll grow out of it, maybe you just don't have much going on in your life? Spend more time with friends and get some hobbies.
