A female reader, anonymous, writes (25 November 2018):

This sounds absolutely totally normal. If you shave a sensitive area, then it will feel sensitive when the hairs grow back. It feels like prickles rather than hairs and sharp prickles!

I never understand why people take a blade to such a sensitive area. Why not use hair removing cream? Easy and the regrowth is nowhere near as uncomfortable.

Go to your doctor and ask for advuce in medical terms in case you are getting an allergy rash or infection from a used razor.

Get meds. Don't grin and bare it.

Get a medical talc or cream. Sometimes you can give yourself blood poisoning if you use a rusty razor.

What you're experiencing is normal- don't worry. It's the one thing that's often not mentioned when the subject of shaving one's fun zone. Next time, if you want to do something like that, just trim to very short- it's still a good look and causes no discomfort to you afterwards. you might find that keeping those hairs under control with a regular trim is somthing you find more comfortable. I'm a guy, and I do. I was once went bald and the hairs growing back was a nightmare, I've never done it since!

N91 agony auntWait for it to grow back. What else can you do?

You could possibly have ingrown hairs if you’ve cut them too short. I’d rub some kind of soothing cream around the area to hopefully reduce the level of pain. At least you’ve learnt that it’s not for you.

Edit: as for what to do to help with the painful feeling you have now, there are creams that will help soothe pain and promote healing. Bikini Zone makes one (also available at London Drugs). After a little practice, you shouldn’t feel the need to use it anymore.

You’ll also likely find that the hair will grow back a little prickly. This is because your hairs are naturally tapered (thicker at the base). Because you’ve cut them, the thicker base is the new top. One trick is to use a tiny drop of leave-in conditioner that will help soften the hair as it grows back. But be careful using too many products if you have very sensitive skin.

Well... I’m not a girl, but I know a little about shaving nether regions. First of all, only do it if it makes YOU feel good.

Unless you have some skin condition, it shouldn’t hurt after. First, exfoliate gently before and after (this helps prevent ingrown hairs). Spend some time in a hot bath or shower so your skin is flush (a wash cloth soaked in hot water can work too). Use shaving gel. London Drugs sells Bikini Zone gel which works well. Just a little bit is enough. It should be slippery (the razor shouldn’t be pulling on your skin). Be careful with foaming gels as they make it hard to see what you’re doing. Use a new, 5 blade razor. ALWAYS go in the direction your hair naturally grows. It may seem faster to go the other way, but this will cause painful razor burn. You can get just as close a shave going the correct direction if your razor is sharp and well rinsed. Rinse the razor CONSTANTLY. Add more gel if needed. Take your time and be careful. Keep the area clean for a day or so after (don’t sit in sweaty clothes etc). Your skin needs time to heal and bacteria will cause irritation. Hope this helps.
