reader, anonymous, writes (7 September 2006): You can't know whether you love someone that much unless you've been in a romantic relationship with them. There's a certain level of intimacy you need to attain, because otherwise you're just filling in all the cracks you don't know about him with daydreams and idealizations. It doesn't sound like you two have moved past the friend stage, so if you're really worried about whether he'll take your avowal of true loooooooooove seriously, you might want to work up to it with some dating or even the much, much easier admission that you fancy him. Generally, to avoid embarassment, you should only give out the old "I love you" when you're quite sure the other person will say it back and mean it.
