I'm a 16 year old guy who is good with girls, but i never get into relationships because i don't have my drivers license yet. For the longest time ive been afraid to go on dates because that would mean i would need to be driven by my mom. I'm embarrassed by her when shes around my friends/girlfriends. And to my family's knowledge, Ive never had a girlfriend. But Ive had a couple in the past. I don't want to tell her anything because ill hurt her feelings. What should i do?

Tisha-1 agony auntLola, the public transit system in the US is vastly different than the extensive, busy and well-run (for the most part) system you have there in the UK. I say this from first hand experience. If our poster is out in the wilds of suburbia, he is very dependent on his parents for transportation. It's stupid, but there it is. We Americans need wheels to get around.

You know what? Your mother knows very well that she embarasses you. The other thing she knows is that you will someday get over that feeling, because she had the exact same feeling about her parents.

I think your mom may have some idea that you have liked girls in the past, and I really doubt she'd have hurt feelings if you told her this. Especially if you tell her after you first tell her that you love her and appreciate all she does for you. That should soften her right up. The thing is, once you tell her this, she might have some ideas that could help you with the date thing. Like SY said, she could drop you somewhere and then collect you afterwards. The movies? A coffee shop?

Give your mom a little credit for knowing what you're going through. She was there once too. Maybe a long time ago, way back before the internet, but she gets it. Trust me.

Good luck with the dating thing!

It's no big deal dude. If you dont have a license just tell the girl and she really wont care that much. If you're embarrassed of your parents driving ya'll, just ask her to meet you somewhere where your parents can drop you off.

A reader, anonymous, writes (16 September 2009):

Just go out with her after school to a place nearby. I used to walk afterschool all the time to the nearby restaraunts. Your mom can pick you up from there and so can hers.

Or like eyes said, just get your liscense, go with another friend and double up. Or have the girl's parents drive. It's no big deal and no reason to not date. Everyone has to deal with the same embarrassment of not being able to drive themselves and not wanting their parents to do it. So I doubt you'll be made fun of.
