I need legal advice

Question - (27 September 2008) 2 Answers - (Newest, 29 September 2008)
A female United Kingdom age 51-59, *ueenanne writes:

I have just recently separated from my husband. This was my decision as I caught him being unfaithful for the third time. We have a child together and I remain in our home which we both own. My husband is paying me a sum of money per week towards maintenance and he is paying around £120 per month towards the mortgage. The mortgage payments are £750 per month and because I earn more money I am paying the rest. My whole wage is gone after paying the mortgage and the bills so myself and my daughter are having to live off £35 per week. My husband thinks that he does not have to contribute as "I threw him out". Please can someone help and tell me what my rights are?

I'm sorry you're going through this...but try to think of this as a fresh start in life. When your heart starts to heal, you'll be ready for a REAL man to love YOU... (Just use the wisdom you've learned to stay away from 'cheater' types.)

As far as legal advice, here in the states, 'Legal Aid'(state funded lawyer) is available to people with low incomes...They also offer 'Mediator' services (someone that speaks between you and ex to work out solutions to finalize divorce) Don't know if this helps you, and if your country has any services like this??? Hope so...Take Care

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (28 September 2008):

Threaten him with divorce. He knows that is going to cost him more as it's going to be his fault the marriage ended.

Once he gets told you have found a solicitor and will only speak to him through them, then he may suddenly come around to the fact that housing and feeding his daughter costs more than the £30 a week that he is paying.

Other than that, have you got a creative side? Can you take up a second job making stuff to sell at Christmas markets? I do that and it only costs about £20 for a small stall at a local fair for a day.

Good Luck!! xx
