I might be pregnant but I've been drunk in the past month! Will this affect the baby?

Hello. I'm wondering how long or how much alcohol it takes to affect a fetus.

I'm on the pill and I am late with my period now by two weeks. Last month was my birthday (I got drunk at my party - I'm in my mid-20's) and occasionally I have a few drinks after work (maybe 1 or 2 a week), except for the past week. I'm freaking out because if I'm pregnant I'm afraid I may have damaged the baby with last month's drinking! I drank when I didn't know that I might be pregnant and would NEVER drink or do anything to harm a baby I was carrying otherwise!!!

I know that drinking alcohol can affect the growth of the fetus, cause other problems, etc - but does anyone know if one night of heavy drinking and a few drinks here and there would really mess things up for it? I have a guess that it would. I'm just hoping that maybe someone might know otherwise.

(PS - I'm going to get a pregnancy test tonight, but I'm trying to prepare for if it turns up positive. I feel awful!)

Lemonpixie agony auntIt shouldn't affect the baby, but that doesn't mean you can drink now. Usually the first few months drinking wont hurt the fetus. However do mention to the doc that you did drink. Congrats on being preggers. Hope everything turns out well

Hi Eyes,

Yes, I will be sure to mention that I am on the pill, however that should be in my files already. Although the pill is great at what's it's supposed to do, it does not always work 100% of the time. (That's how my husband came into the world. heh) :)

eyeswideopen agony auntI'd be sure to mention to the doctor that you are on pill however. By the way how did you get pregnant if you are taking the birth control pill?

nothing you eat or drink affects the baby until the 8th week from the first day of your last period. however, if you suspect you are pregnant it is wise to avoid alcohol as soon as possible. i hope that helps.

Ok dont worry too much about it, When I found out that I was pregnant I realised that I had had a heavy nights drinking and the odd few glasses here and there, but when I asked my doctor if it would harm my baby she told me that drinking in the first three months of pregnancy would have absolutly no affect on my unborn child.

so rest assured if you are pregnant the baby should be fine.

I would be very interested to find out the results of your pregnancy test. What your the outcome Good luck.
