If you are looking for some compliments or positive attention from your boyfriend then this is the wrong way to go around it. Don't joke with him unless you are prepared to take it back.

Maybe he was joking. You know, like you were.
Or maybe he took you seriously and was upset that you're already planning a future without him. I'm leaning toward the former though.
Lessons to be learned here:
Don't fish for compliments or reassurance
Say what you mean and mean what you say
Cut back on the dumb jokes

Sometimes "jokes" backfire. Same with "pranks".
In this case YOUR "joke" backfired. While I think you were hoping to make a point or have him declare that he didn't need to look for a wife... he didn't feel like playing along with your little game so he GAVE as good as you did.
If you can't take a joke, don't toss them out there.

Suppose I was a guy absolutely not interested in getting married now but my GF throws a “joke” to look for a wife. Joke is little irksome because she knows I’m not interested and she pokes. So I brush it off, sure I’ll start tomorrow, but then I realize I’ll throw a jab at her in the same irksome way and add: I really like blonds, knowing fully well that it will be irksome cuz you brunette.
Seems to me, and unlike you, your BF knew how to handle irksome jokes.
So I wouldn’t be offended on his comments because if I am dishing it out I’d be prepared to take it.

You made a joke, he made a joke back. He said he would do as you suggested, in your joke, after his birthday.
This means even though he was making a joke response to YOUR joke he was still telling you he wanted to spend his birthday with you as his girlfriend.

Relax! Don't let him know he got you!
If he prefers blondes, maybe you can get a wig!
Sweetheart, blonde is only a hair color! They're not a different species of women! Most are fake blondes anyway!
