Yesterday I had to work in another area at work (just yesterday) due to their understaffing.

Not 1 person but the in charge introduced themself, or said hello. why so rude?

If I had a different person in my area for one day I’d always introduce myself! Why are they so rude??

Also not one person asked if I needed help, or wanted a break.

I didnt need help but thats not the point!

So so rude??

I may have to go again tommorrow or all this week, due to their understaffing.

Thank god Im not permanent!

aunt honesty agony auntDid you introduce yourself to them and try and get to know them? It works both ways. Either way it is only short term so don't let it annoy you. Just get on with your work and hopefully you wont need to be there much longer.

Could be any number of reasons, including those already given and more - are you very pretty? Are the other workers female who may get jealous that the men in the company will like you ? Chances are they simply can't be bothered to incorporate a 'floating' or 'temporary' staff member - I used to temp, and was treated like this so much of the time; permanent staff would take time off and you'd be hired as a temp for a few days to do a really horrible part of their job so that they didn't have to do it, no-one would bother to speak to you because they knew you'd be leaving in a couple of days, no-one wanted to help you or make friends with you because everyone wanted a promotion and no-one wanted 'the temp' to get a step ahead of them, work-life was just horrible and everyone was depressed, the girls were all desperate to get dates with the guys so resented that the guys may like you - anything and everything you can think of. Honestly, the only thing to do is be cheerful, polite and do your job without reacting to their hostility at all. Do NOT go out of your way to try to be friendly, though, or they will think you are a pushover. Just be nice, and work hard and eventually something better will come along.

A reader, anonymous, writes (26 November 2018):

Keep your head down and do your job. Often when an area is understaffed upper-management is weeding-out the trouble-makers and sloths. It is possible they have been disciplined or fear you're a spy; because someone among them is in trouble. It's an old management trick. Starve-out the department to rid yourself of the trouble-makers. You also get to save a little money in the process.

Whenever you're in a hostile environment in the workplace; it's best to let your professionalism lead the way. Your human instincts and sense of common-courtesy knows that they all should be grateful for the help.

You just stepped into a pit of vipers, and they're frustrated that the help is only temporary. That's usually a sign the department might be completely replaced one by one. For budgetary reasons, and repeated issues among personnel.

Restructuring of their department is underway.

They don't want you to feel comfortable; because they want someone permanent. It may not happen for a long-time, and some will quit to the benefit of the department. Replacements will be found when the boss decides they should. Eyes are on everyone.

Be polite regardless. You can't control their attitudes; so long as everyone is doing their jobs. For all they know, you might end-up being their boss!

You'll appreciate your usual pleasant work-station all the more!

Honeypie agony auntMaybe they are used to getting "floaters" who don't know what to do or they see people come and go and therefore just don't care any more.

Maybe they are just so understaffed that manners and common courtesy has gone out the window.

It is a shame, but really NO ONE here can read their "collective mind" and know why they had no manners.

All YOU can do, is do your job, be polite yourself and don't behave like them, ever.

Chin up and count your blessing that your normal work environment is better.

Not much else to do.
