I don't want to tell my family that the baby's father is part Turkish!

A female Australia age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I'm pregnant but now raising this kid alone. My family have no idea who the father is and as he does not wish to be involued, i see no reason why my family should know. It is the child at the end of the day which is most important. My question is a bit on the shallow side so please bare with me. My baby's father is half turkish/half white and i'm full white (as far as i know) therefore my baby would technically be a quarter turkish and 3 quarters white. What do you think the chances are of my baby being white? The baby father does look turkish. I know it sounds vain and shallow - i wouldn't mind what colour my baby is as long as it is healthy however my family ... are, hmmmm, a tad on the racist side and i wouldn't want them thinking any less of us because it is evident that the baby's father is not completely white as they would wish. I don't mind him/her having his father's features but i also don't want it to be overally obvious that he/she is part turkish. I think the baby will look more white to be honest however it would be nice to have opinions agreeing, disagreeing or telling me off for already being a bad mum.

Your baby will look white and any dark features will be seen as Italian/Mediteranean. Dont make up the nationality of the father, if they ask about his background just say you dont want to talk about him its too painful right now. After baby is born, your family will fall in love with him/her and it won't matter who his father is. If you decide to tell them later, they will not suddenly change their minds about the baby. The baby has a right to know his heritage in later years so keep that door open by rather refusing to disclose rather than lie for now. People like Elvis Presley who I believe was 1/4 American Indian looked white but had the genetic beauty and uniqueness of another race in him and the Black velvet look helped his career a little I think (!!) and in red-neck America too; so dont see it as entirely negative. Good luck with the baby.

Aunty BimBim agony auntDid you see the Kath & Kim episode when the baby was born, and they brought out a black baby .....

However, it is very, very unlikely the baby is going to be anything more that olived skinned etc etc, if people ask just say the baby's father was from the Mediteranean, I think its going to be a beautiful baby.

Try not to worry about the baby's appearance too much, I dont think it will be a problem.

However, are you sure you dont want the baby's father to be involved, some time down the track the baby will be asking questions. You should also consider getting financial assistance from the father to help raise the baby, you may also be asked by Centrelink who the father is for payment of Family Tax Benefit etc. IF you live where there is easy access to a Centrelink Office why not make an appointment to speak to a social worker, anything you say to the social worker will be kept confidential. Good luck to both you and your little one

most probably your baby will be white as more than half of the turkish people are white or light complexion. I am turkish and believe me there are alot of nice people among us as there are spineless ones like any other race. the father of your baby seems to me sorry to say is one of the latter. I hope he comes to his senses and recognizes his baby at some stage. I am sure when your baby is born and you hold him in your arm you wouldn't care what color he is coz he would be just as beautiful no matter. I am sure your family also will stand by you. I wish you and your baby all the best in life.
