writes: I'm going for an STD test soon (with my partner), but am concerned about finding a gynaecologist and contraception.I know that condoms work well, but I also know that two types of contraception is best. Obviously the second kind is solely for preventing pregnancy. Assuming the STD/STI/HIV tests come back clean, I'll be moving on to sorting out a second form of contraception. But its not so simple for me. I cannot take any hormone based contraception (the implant/the pill etc) for medical reasons relating to risk of thrombosis (blood clotting) and rheumatoid arthritis.I am aware things like spermacide are not very effective. So the only other alternative I have been able to find in my research is the Intra-Uterine Device or Intra-Uterine Contraceptive Device. Do you have any experience with one? What is it like? What side effects did you experience? Are there any other GOOD alternatives for someone who can't use anything with hormones? What about the male pill that I have heard rumours about? Is it available on the market?Once we've dealt with those, I know that ideally I should see a Gynaecologist for a pap smear and implantation and everything... So, how do I go about seeing one **privately** (i.e. not a free clinic etc) without giving them my healthcare/medical aid details? (I don't want them to have my medical aid details as I am still a dependent on the policy and everything will go through my Mom).Do you have any advice or information? Anything particularly pertinent to South Africa? Thanks

reader, anonymous, writes (18 May 2011): Personally, I love my IUD. Like you I can't take hormones (my body just hates progesterone, natural and unnatural) so I got the IUD put in. It hurt a lot to get it put in but it only lasts about a minute, I was able to walk home from the doctors and everything. You will get cramps afterwards and your period a few days later, but after that its been great! I don't know its there, I can't feel it and no real change to my periods except they start off heavier! Its good for ten years so I don't have to worry about getting pregnant. I really would recommend getting one!
