Fancy yourself as an agony aunt? Add your answer to this question!

A female reader, Abella United States +, writes (29 December 2014):

Abella agony auntYou don't want to marry anyone else but A.

Though you have agreed to meet B - Because you care about the opinions of your parents.

You also think B and you are not meant to end up as husband and wife as you think both you and B are not interested in each other..

You work away from home and both you and A earn good money so I wonder do you also live away from home as well?

If you chose to work overseas and A chose to work overseas in the same country, then would that make it easier for the two of you to live together and marry overseas?

Or do you fear the displeasure of your parents and fear the potential ostracism of your parents if you do not marry B?

Your parents may choose to accept A though you have already mentioned that you live in a very traditional setting.

Your parents may choose to not attend your wedding if you marry A.

Your parents may choose to ostracize you - and not have contact with you after your marry.

Please be careful about your next step.

Honor/Honour killings are rare in some parts of India while other parts of India have some Honour/Honor Killings and a few areas do have more honor killings than any other parts of India.

Your own safety is more important than anything. If you live in one of the affected traditional areas you need to ensure that you and A remain safe from any reaction that could negatively affect you or A.

I hope that your state in India is NOT one of the states affected by honour killings

A female reader, Abella United States +, writes (29 December 2014):

Abella agony auntThe traditional view in India is that your parents have already given you everything and therefore the child of those parents should look to their parents for the guidance and the standards that are expected of them.

Traditional values in Indian life mean that people are expected to conform to the values of the family.

Yes things are changing, albeit slowly. And perhaps will not change very much during the lifetime of your parents.

Western values expect the bride and groom to find each other and then have a period of getting to know each other and once they feel the person is "the one" they have a "meet the parents" informal introduction. Western couple often fund their own weddings. A proportion of western marriages do end in divorce. Yet there are still many many western marriages that remain happy from day one and continue that way.

what are the alternatives ?

1. You could agree to marry a man you do not love and live unhappily ever after.

2.you and your current friend could choose to marry in a different country and choose to live in that different country.

3. You could decide to remain unmarried for the rest of your and never marry anyone ever again

There may even be other options that you are considering.

Just as in other countries where situations divide people - be they cultural or social or financial or other, India too has things that result in different social group. Some mix in well together, some do not.

There are many strata levels in Indian society. Religion is one such divide in India where people who are Hindi, Buddhist, Muslim, Christian and even Agnostic and Atheist

Traditionally people married a partner of the same religion

In the west it is not uncommon for marriages to be inter-religious but less common in India.

That said there are many high profile persons in India who do successfully choose to marry a person of an entirely different religion to themselves.

Some parents choose to cut an adult child out of their lives completely, when their adult child dares to marry a person who the parents have judged to be unsuitable.

That must be very distressing for the ostracized adult who the parents have shut out of their lives.

The parents then miss out on seeing their grandchildren and they die bitter yet satisfied that they upheld their beliefs on honour.

Many parents in India and of Indian descent are very opposed to their adult daughter or their adult son marrying into a family that follows a different religion to themselves.

Honour can even be cited to explain why some parents choose to murder a daughter for daring to marry outside of her religion.

The parents claim it shames them and so prefer to face murder charges for killing their adult child rather than see their adult child marry a person of a different religion.

This is an extreme reaction, but it must be faced that this does sometimes happen.

Inter caste marriages used to be soundly disapproved of amongst families in India, and even today a different caste can be used to explain why a relationship suffers pressures.

Especially if one spouse believes that they are treated less favourably all because of their caste, Inter caste marriages face the most opposition in rural areas.

Also inter caste marriages are more common than inter religious marriages. Such marriages tend to happen more in the cities than in the villages.

As adults over the age of 21 it is up to you whether you think it is right to follow your parents rules completely or whether you feel confident enough to make your own way in life with a partner of your choice.

Below are some examples of marriages in India where the groom is Muslim and the bride is Hindi.

Or vice a versa.

Once such a list would be taboo to even consider it could be possible. It contains high profile people who the general populations know and hear about regularly because the persons are part of public life.

Yet the list proves that such inter marriages relationships do happen in India and in Pakistan. Change does happen slowly but the most constant thing you will always face in life is Change.

We both are working away from home. My family met him as friend when they came to visit me.

We both are earning good and we are software professionals. My parents are not ready to listen anything. I dont want the boy to go to mosque and pray. He is a good human that is enough.

We both are open minded about religion.

He never asked me to convert and neither his family did.

But my parents love me a lot. They gave me enough freedom to study and work outside. Now they are pleading not to marry him.

On one hand I have my parents who will support anything I do except marrying him and the other hand I have this person who loves me a lot. It is difficult to choose between two options. I spoke with my friends who suggested to run away but I can not leave my parents. I can not think of anything happening to them.

Abella agony auntI think your father is starting to panic, due to his own health issues. His desperation is not helpful.

You know that your parents would be beyond utterly upset if you turned your back on your religion. Your parents would not compromise on that.

Plus that could be a very dangerous option for you to reveal some reservations about your religion.

And you certainly cannot reveal these reservations to the Iman nor any relative. They would probably blame A for your disquiet over some aspects. Suggesting to you that A made you into a doubtful follower. That would not be good for A.

If A is willing to convert then I fail to see, (if tolerance is respected), how your parents could then refuse to see A, unless there is both a religious and a Caste issue that is preventing A from being accepted by your family.

.

The rigidity of opinion in all this, refusing to even consider A, who is willing to convert to Islam, is baffling to a those unfamiliar to the Caste issues and the polarized views on religion in your country.

.

What would be the situation if A approached an Iman to join your religion (but made NO MENTION of his love for you) and then made sure that he regularly attended the Mosque at the same time your family attended the Mosque.

Would that make it easier for him to be accepted by your paarents?

By the way if either of you have completed studies, (like nursing) and have applied to work in the West, then you would find that both of you could probably follow either religion and still get married (you are both older than 21 years) and then go on to live together and have children together.

In the west no one would raise an eyebrow if you married and had children together.

For your own safety and if you live in an area prone to ''So called Honour murders''do always put your safety first and the same applies to A.

At all times speak very respectfully in private to your parents and behave utterly respectfully towards your parents in public and privately.

Do not do anything that could leave you vulnerable and certainly remain aware of any situation where your parents are becoming agitated about and start claiming that you have dishonoured them.

I am surprised that your parents have not tried to stop you seeing A over the last four years. Only now are they starting to panic.

This has led to a vulnerable situation for A and for you.

At the very least I suspect that if both B and you demonstrate no interest in each other then that might help.

Time might help your parents to see things your way. But there will be a need for great patience - patience by you and

Patience by A.

The person I love has spoken to his family and they are ready. They asked him to speak with my parents. We both are from completely different cultural background.

Language is also a big issue, but he can speak in my mother tongue. My parents are not ready to listen to him.

He spoke with my mother but she refused. He bought a new year card for them but now he does not know whether to give or not.

I have not seen the person B and I am not even interested. My parents said if they like everything they will fix the marriage.

I live in a joint family. And our neighbours are also relatives. My parents are worried about losing their name in society.

The boy was ready to convert also, but still they are adamant. I can not think of anyone now.

I am a muslim and he is a Hindu. I was born muslim. I can not be open about my feelings to my parents

Abella agony auntI am trying to give you culturally appropriate advice, even though I personally think I would experience extreme opposition to an arranged marriage, if I lived in your country

you must be feeling very conflicted indeed.

I know that a difference in Religion is a huge issue in India as is a different level in the Caste system, that still applies in many parts of India.

You need to feel some sense of compatibility between the suggested husband (B), as suggested by your parents, and yourself.

Your parents probably do not intend to force you into this marriage but for some reason they don’t see your current friend (A) as suitable. How well do you get on with the family of your current friends (A)?

A four year courtship is a long time. What has (A) done to try to convince your father and his parents to sit down and discuss marriage to you? Does he too face too much opposition at home to any efforts made to marry you to (A)?

Does (A) also find that his parents are also very opposed to a marriage between you and (A)? If yes then that is a big stumbling block.

Because whoever you are marrying you are also marrying into his family, so you need to observe and try to determine if these people share your values and attitudes.

If your father’s health is already failing then your father is possibly feeling pressured by the norms of society, to arrange a match that he thinks will best suit you.

In another four years your father will find it even harder for you to find a husband. Since you are now in your mid twenties.

Many guys in your age group and in your area may already be married, and to girls younger than you. Right now your parents are worried that you will never marry and they do not want that to happen.

And the culture in your country assumes that you need a father to determine the best choice for a husband for you. Maybe one day the system will change, but it is the system, most of the time in your culture.

Your parents are also worried about what other people think. I know that what people think of your is none of your business and what other people think of your parents is also none of your business nor their business.

But you know that many people spend their whole day gossiping and making mischief and making up the rest. Your parents may already be aware of some opinions of other family members being advanced for why you have not yet married.

You know the truth. You love (A) and have loved (A) for a long time.

Are you aware of any efforts by the family of (A) to arrange a marriage for (A) to another girl? If this is the case then you could lose (A) at the same time as you reject (B) so do tread carefully as you approach the meeting with (B) and his family.

Is there anyone in the family who could speak up for you and encourage the family of (A) and your parents to consider a marriage between (A) and you?

If not then you may have to meet (B) with an open mind.

Do remember that your father is encouraging you to consider (B).

Though your father is unlikely to want to put undue pressure on you. He will surely not expect that he can force you to marry (B) if you and (B) feel no connection whatsoever.

It should be your choice to accept or reject (B).

The meeting where you are introduced to (B) is not indicating that a marriage between you and (B) is a forgone conclusion.

Though (B) will no doubt try to be very attentive towards you, once you have been introduced.

If (B) seems hesitant and reluctant then do let your father know this as soon as possible. Since (B) may also have someone else that (B) likes who he has known for a while.

Certainly do not allow a courtship with (B) to continue on for a few years if you feel no connection at all with (B) and you sense that no connection is starting to grow after you have been introduced.

One good thing to consider is that arranged marriages in India do have a much lower rate of divorce (2 per cent only) than marriages in the west where those marriages in the west are love marriage and are not an arranged marriage. Yet in the west those “love” marriages do have a higher rate of divorce than the 2% of marriages that end in divorce in India.

The Indian idea is that love grows over time in a marriage and that continuously the parties need to be considerate and kind to each other to ensure that the love grows.

Whereas marriages in the West are assumed to start with Love and then sometimes poor behaviour of one or the other or both parties has the effect of dampening the love over time.

Wishing you the Best for a Happy future.
